Mouthguards

Accidents during sport are one of the most common causes of dental injury. Many of these injuries could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard from our Hobart clinic.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a flexible device worn over teeth and surrounding gum tissues during sport to protect them from damage. A good quality mouthguard should also:

  • Allow you to speak
  • Allow you to breathe easily
  • Stay firmly in place while playing sport
  • Be easy to clean

Why wear a mouthguard from our Hobart Clinic?

While a well-fitting mouthguard is essential to protect your teeth and smile from potential injury, it is particularly important if you wear braces, have fixed anterior bridgework, implants or other extensive dental work.

Some of the common injuries suffered while playing sport are damaged or knocked out teeth, broken jaws and cut lips. Wearing a mouthguard spreads the force of a knock to the face instead of concentrating it in one place which reduces the chance of an injury. A mouthguard can also help to limit the risk of soft tissue damage by acting as a barrier between teeth and braces and the cheeks and help stop accidentally biting the lips or the tongue.

Who should wear a Custom Made mouthguard?

If you are playing or training for a sport where there is the possibility of contact to the face you should wear a mouthguard. These sports can include acrobatics, Australian rules football, basketball, boxing, cricket, field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, netball, rugby, skateboarding, skiing, soccer, squash, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling.

The cost of a mouthguard made by our Hobart clinic is minimal compared to what it may cost to repair the damage sustained in a dental injury sustained while playing sport.

NightGuards

For some people, the toll of grinding or clenching their teeth (bruxism) while they sleep can produce a wide range of damage that includes:

  • Front teeth that have worn down, so they are flat and even in length.
  • Micro-cracks and broken fillings
  • Teeth ground down to the dentin, which is causing sensitivity to heat and cold.
  • Gum recession
  • Loose teeth caused by the rocking effect of grinding
  • Headache and jaws aches due to muscle overuse
  • Damage to jaw joints (TMJ)

One of the best ways to stop this damage is to wear a nightguard. These particular types of mouthguard are custom-fitted by a dentist. It acts as a bumper absorbing the force of grinding or clenching of your teeth while you sleep. Fitted correctly, it will protect your teeth while you sleep and reduce symptoms.
